Friends Nursery School is a modified parent cooperative. By working together, we not only support our school but also enrich the sense of a shared purpose and sustain our nurturing community.
In order to keep our school safe and clean for children, each family participates in three workdays per year. One workday per school year may be “bought out” for a fee determined by the board.
Each family is required to fulfill ten hours of fundraising work per school year. All our fundraising efforts go towards our scholarship program, which gives children the financial opportunity to attend preschool at FNS. This is a key part of our mission as a school and a requirement with our lease with the Friends Meeting.
Most of your fundraising hours will contribute to the production of our children’s carnival, Fiesta, held each April. Fiesta is a fun, family friendly event, a social time for our school as well as a great way to raise money for our scholarship program. Make sure to write that weekend down in your calendar so you can reserve it. There are additional opportunities to fulfill your fundraising hours throughout the year and we strive to keep you updated on those opportunities as they arise. In lieu of ten hours of fundraising, you can offer to “sponsor a child,” paying an amount upfront that will fulfill all your fundraising requirements.
Our morning classroom commitments are flexible but required.
Parents can sign up to be a participating parent (PP), working in the classroom once a week, for which they receive tuition credit..
Parents can sign up to be a half-PP, working in the classroom every other week, for which they receive tuition credit.
Other morning parents must commit to being available 8 days each year as an on-call substitute participating parent should the regular participating parent be unavailable to work that day
Our Afternoon programs have no classroom participation requirement. But parents are always welcome, and are encouraged to lend a hand in various art or cooking projects
Board & Committee Jobs
The Board is the decision making body of the school and works by consensus. Parents are encouraged to volunteer to serve on the board - for which they receive tuition, workday and/or fundraising credits, depending on their responsibilities.
Committee jobs are also an important part of our school functioning. Committee jobs receive workday and/or fundraising credits. Some Committee jobs also receive tuition credit. The jobs are fun and really help the school.
